Holidays in Stalin’s Russia: vintage travel posters

Monday 10 November 2014

A collection of vintage travel posters is to be auctioned at Christie’s this week.

The sale, which takes place on Thursday, November 13, includes several by the Russian travel agency Intourist promoting holidays in 1930s Soviet Union. Founded by Joseph Stalin in 1929, Intourist was the country’s official travel agency, responsible for convincing foreign holidaymakers to visit the Soviet states. The posters presented a more cosmopolitan, capitalist-influenced image of the Soviet Union than was seen within the country.
